Ladybird Farm relies on creating a diverse ecology for natural food production. We focus on developing habitat and utilizing practices to promote beneficial insects to help keep pest populations under control. The goal being achieving a pest/predator balance through our insect community in the garden. We also strive to create a healthy soil which harbors a diverse microbial community to promote plant growth. We achieve these pursuits through planting cover crops, growing hedgerows, minimizing our disturbance of the soil, creating rich compost, and practicing crop rotation.
Through these farming methods, Ladybird Farm works with nature to be a reliable producer of environmentally responsible foods. We hope our produce will have a positive and nourishing impact on our local consumers and, in turn, propel them forward in their pursuit to live healthy, vibrant, and creative lives.
About the Farmer…
Kyle is the owner and operator of Ladybird Farm. After graduating from the University of Maryland with a degree in Horticulture and Crop Production in 2010, he dove into the organic farming field and hasn’t looked back. He has experience managing small-scale organic vegetable farms in both Maryland and Virginia and also spent time managing chickens, pigs, sheep and goats. Skills around installing extensive, automated irrigation systems were honed after spending time in Asheville, North Carolina, which have proven to be quite beneficial in building this farm.
Kyle’s “office” is outside in nature, and he wouldn’t want it any other way. If he’s not in the garden, you’ll find him getting his hands dirty with landscaping projects, studying birds and insects, and keeping a record of how many box turtles he can safely help pass busy roads each year.
